Cat Eye Sunglasses
Rising to prominence in the 1950s and 60s, the cat-eye style has maintained its relevance and allure due to its exaggerated definition and playfulness. Popularised by screen icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe, this upswept silhouette is now an enduring symbol of glamour, now gracing the faces influencers like of Gigi Hadid and Rihanna.
Created in the 1920’s by American filmmaker and designer Altina Schinasi, it was born out of desire to offer the women of New York more captivating options. The original shape was inspired by the romantic and whimsical Harleyquin masks worn at ballroom dances. During post-war years, as women embraced their desires and lead with their independence, more opticians catered for this feminine market. Designers made their own mark with adding more glamorous details and playing with vibrant colours.
This style took to the spotlight more recently in 2021, dominating the Spring Summer runway, where it could be seen on anyone everywhere. While the original design was bold and dramatic, contemporary brands such as Gucci and Saint Laurent have refined the aesthetic, offering a more subtle and sophisticated interpretation of this timeless classic.
